Hydrotherapy is a weightless bearing exercise that encourages full extension of the limbs. The heated water helps to reduce pressure on painful joints and aching muscles. Depending on the condition of the dog they may damage them self more by exercising on hard surfaces, due to vibrations, which run up the leg on hard impact exercise.
The warm water of the pool combined with the jets has a massaging effect, which promotes circulation and helps reduce swelling.
Hydrotherapy is also an excellent way for general fitness and weight loss. The cardiovascular system, specifically the lungs and the heart are exercised more when in the water. A five-minute swim for a dog is roughly equivalent to a five mile run.
